Nutritionists, food bloggers and weight loss coaches often talk about metabolism and how it relates to weight loss. If you’ve ever been on a diet or followed a healthy diet, you’ve heard many times that it’s important to speed up your metabolism in order to lose weight. What is it and is it necessary to speed it up?
According to scientific sources, metabolism is a set of chemical reactions in the body which serve to maintain life in the organism. That is, in simple words, it is a constant process occurring in every cell of the body and is aimed at supplying energy. The metabolic rate cannot be calculated. At least, scientists have not invented it yet. In the same way, from a scientific point of view, you cannot say that one person’s metabolic process is fast and another person’s, on the contrary, is slow.
The term “slow metabolism” includes lethargy, sleepiness, low food intake and high levels of stress. In this case the body reduces efficiency and begins to save energy because the supply of substances for vital activity has decreased. This is such slow work for the body and creates low metabolism. Those who are in the process of losing weight make a big mistake as they unconsciously slow the work of the body down when they only eat a little and move a lot. When they return to their normal routine their body begins to store energy in the form of stored fat in preparation for the next “diet”. Such games with metabolism do not end well. The more often you lose weight like this, the faster you will get metabolic disorders.
As for “fast metabolism”, this is the usual metabolism of a normal, healthy, physically developed person who receives a full diet and adheres to an active lifestyle.
All those who want to lose weight should remember that the main thing is to speed up metabolism, i.e. normalise metabolism and exercise and maintain a balanced diet. The more the physical activity, the stronger the diet should be. Thus, the body will “send” all the calories, roughly speaking, to the muscles because now they are actively working and they need energy. Therefore, those who reduce weight with the help of exercise will definitely succeed.
No matter what scientists say, to erase the terms “slow metabolism” and “very fast metabolism” in the mind is almost unrealistic and even more so to recognise that it cannot be accelerated. Nevertheless, there are ways (albeit indirectly) in which one can affect metabolism.
In order to have a good metabolism a person needs to:
- drink clean water.
- get eight hours of sleep a night.
- eat breakfast.
- eat enough protein food.
- eat 5-6 times in small portions.
- eat foods to “speed up” metabolism such as red pepper, cinnamon, citrus fruits, green tea, broccoli, etc.
