How to Get a Quote for the Cost of Shipping a Vehicle

For most Americans, they don’t move far when relocating. 84% move to the same metro area, whereas only 0.28% leave the metro/micro area.

While it’s a small minority, you might find yourself in it. This means that relocations can be large and costly, and you need all the help you can get.

One way to lessen the burden is to utilize auto shipping services. But how much will it cost? And how can you ensure you get the best prices?

Read on to find out how to get a quote for the cost of shipping a vehicle.

How to Find Out the Cost of Shipping a Vehicle

Generally, there are 2 ways to request an auto transport quote: by phone or online. You can also visit the offices of auto transport companies to ask in person, but seeing as that’s impractical for most people (especially if you want to get multiple quotes), we’ll focus on the above 2 methods.

However, you’ll first need to find companies to get quotes from! Thankfully, this is easy to do.

You can perform a Google search for terms like “auto shipping company”, “auto transport company”, “car shipping company”, “car transport company”, etc. On the results pages, only select companies that have excellent reviews, especially recent ones. Avoid those with a majority of bad reviews or none at all.

Once you’ve whittled down the list to your top 3 or 5 auto shippers, it’s time to request quotes. Here’s how to do so with each method.

Request a Quote by Phone

Grab the company’s phone number and give it a call. Most will have agents manning the stations around the clock, so chances are, you’ll get someone no matter when you call. Just be sure to check the business hours beforehand to avoid disappointment.

The agent will then go through a list of questions to better understand what you need and more importantly, when you need their services. For example, they’ll ask for:

  • Your vehicle’s make and model
  • Pickup and dropoff locations
  • Desired date and/or time
  • Type of hauler you’d like (open or enclosed)

The agent can then run all this information through their system and give you several possible options. Each will have its own price attached, and you’re not obligated to pick any, or to even use that company.

At this point, you can either thank them for the estimates and hang up, or you can move on with scheduling the services. If you want to do the latter, the agent will then arrange for a pickup date and time, then go over how you can prepare your car before the trucker arrives.

Request a Quote Online

If you don’t like talking on the phone and/or need to multitask so a phone call’s not possible, not to worry, as you can request a quote online too. Auto shipping companies will have a cost calculator on their websites.

Here, you’ll enter the shipping details that you’d give to a live agent, such as your vehicle information, pickup and dropoff locations and times, etc. Click “Continue” and the site will generate some results.

Now, you can take a screenshot of these quotes or print them out if you want to explore other options. Otherwise, you can click on the best choice and proceed to schedule a vehicle pickup time and location. You’ll get a confirmation email that also tells you how to prep your vehicle for shipping.

Tips When Looking at Your Quote Options

Now you know how to get a quote for car shipping costs. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you should go with the first appealing one. Here are a few tips to follow so you can have a better time with auto shipping.

Don’t Request Only One Quote

It can take more time and effort to request more than one quote, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. While it’s possible you might get a good price for the first quote, it’s not likely.

Do yourself a favor and ask for at least a few more quotes before you pick a company. This will give you a better idea of whether or not someone’s trying to scam you.

Inquire About Insurance Options

By law, auto transporters must carry some form of cargo insurance. But many companies will go with the bare minimum.

Make sure your vehicle’s protected by asking about the insurance policy. You should also see if they have insurance add-ons to get better coverage if you’re not completely satisfied with their base policy.

Play Around With the Parameters

This is easier to do online, as you’ll be able to tweak the fields on your own. By phone, you can also try asking the agent to change up some parameters, but online, you’re in control of what’s changed.

For example, let’s say you live in a rural area so you’ve put down your address as the pickup location. But did you know that it’ll cost less when you put in major metropolitan areas? Changing small details like this can help you save hundreds of dollars!

Ship Your Vehicle Safely and Affordably

The cost of shipping a vehicle is no small amount, so you need to do your due diligence before you settle on an auto transport company. By knowing how to request quotes and compare them smartly, you’ll be able to get the services you need without spending a fortune.

The next time you want to ship your car, have full confidence knowing you can pick the best shipper at the most affordable prices!
